Davao Airport

When You See These Things, You Know You’re In Davao

July 25, 2012 by Davao Traveler Admin Leave a Comment

1. Durian at the Airport

Durian Sculpture at the Davao International Airport

If you are going to Davao via air travel, the Davao International Airport is your main entry point. As you try to stroll around the premises of the airport, right outside where people are waiting for their expected guess, you’ll soon find that spot where there is a sculpture of the famous durian.

Durian, of course, is a fruit known for its foul smell and good taste that grows in this part of the Asian region. Some foreigners say it smells like hell, but tastes like heaven.

I’m not sure what Kublai Millan (the artist who created this sculpture) is trying to covey with that work of art, but this very prominent piece can be counted as one of Davao’s architectural landmarks.

Could it be that the fruit is so abundant here in Davao?

Do you have any idea?

2. The Marco Polo Hotel

(Click here to book at the Marco Polo Hotel, Davao.)

The Marco Polo Hotel
The Marco Polo Hotel in Davao offers first class hotel accommodation for city travelers.
When you say first-class accommodation in Davao that normally means being booked at the finest hotel right in the middle of the city: the Marco Polo Hotel. Take note that there are a lot of hotels in Davao offering first-class accommodations as well, but the site of Marco Polo makes it very advantageous for business travellers and others who consider accessibility of prime importance while staying in Davao.

Davao doesn’t have high-rise commercial condominium towers just yet — the highest I think is still the Landco Tower — and so the structure of Marco Polo can be considered one of the tallest buildings ever built in Davao. As a matter of fact, Marco Polo’s structure is very visible if you try to go up in high places in the City such as the Jack’s Ridge Restaurant and the Eden Nature Park.

Booking in Marco Polo Hotel Davao is a snap if you use a facility like the one implemented by HotelsCombined.com. The website list a number of hotels (big and small) in specific cities you are interested in visiting. One of good tools provided on the site is the price comparison feature. Click here to see it for yourself.

3. The Mt Apo

The Mt Apo

Talking about high places, the Mt Apo is know as the highest peak in the entire country. And yes, this majestic mountain can be seen standing tall as you direct your sight farther south especially in the earlier time of the day. For the nature lovers, this is a wonderful sight to behold.

Asides: f you are planning to climb the famous Mt Apo, there are three access points going there and all of them are outside of Davao City. It is best to hire the services of a competent tour guide, who is a true expert in the trails of that mountain.

4. Statue of David in Baywalk (Queensland Hotel)

David who?

David is a Biblical figure from whom the Renaissance artist, Michelangelo, derived his inspiration when he created this masterpiece. And no, we did not steal that sculpture from Italy. Ours is only a replica of that sexy figure.

Take a look:

The Statue of David in Davao

This famous structure has its share of praises and criticisms, but consider this: They say there are only four places worldwide where David’s statue can be found. Luckily, you can find one in Davao if you go to a place known as the Baywalk, which is just beside the Queensland Hotel.

The development of Baywalk (also known locally as the Seawall ) takes a somewhat slow pace. Once you are there at the site, you can’t find much interesting stuff to do or things to see, except maybe take pictures of David, the guy himself.

5. The Pearl Farm Beach Resort

(Click here to book a reservation at the Pearl Farm.)

The Pearl Farm Beach Resort in Samal some 45 minutes from DavaoUnknown to many tourists and travellers, both foreigners and locals, this popular beach destination in the south is not really in Davao City. The hotel-resort is located in the nearby Samal Island, some 45-minute boat ride away from Davao City.

But people can’t help it. Pearl Farm is a brand in itself. When they think of a beach resort Davao, the first thing that props up is Pearl Farm.

If you are looking for luxurious beach vacation in this part of the country, book one at the Pearl Farm Beach resort.

If you have not heard of the Pearl Farm before, it is best to get an overview of the resort and read feedbacks from people who have actually visited the place. Click here to get such kind of information.

5 Things You Ought to Know When You’re Davao-bound

July 2, 2009 by Davao Traveler Admin

Year in year out, Davao City (or DC, as I fondly call it) proves worthy of being considered as a strong contender in the tourism arena. Why so? Apart from the urban destinations found in the city, you also get the wonders that only a tropical paradise can offer in ample proportions – the best of both worlds, as they say. And since not all urban centers succeed to retain their “au naturale” look at its best, believe me when I say Davao City is truly one of a kind.

So why don’t you give the ailing traveler in you the chance to roam the world and see places? This time around, you better be in one of Asia’s most livable city. But before that, here are some things you might want to know before gearing up and taking off. They might just eventually convince you to visit us in the soonest possible time.

1. Flight Schedules

First things first; let’s talk about how you can set foot on Davao soil via the skyline. The Davao International Airport caters to both domestic and international flights round the clock, seven days a week. This world class airport never misses the buzz when it comes to bringing tourists to town, welcoming them with a view of a young airport of the future nested in between the beautiful greenery the city is in abundance of.

For domestic flights, all airlines fly daily to-and-fro Manila and Cebu.

For international flights, Cebu Pacific flies from Hong Kong to Davao every Tuesdays and Saturdays. The return flight (Davao to Hong Kong) takes off on Mondays and Fridays. Cebu pacific also flies the Davao-Singapore route every Mondays and Fridays. The return flight (Davao –Singapore) leaves DC on Thursday and Sundays.

Singapore Airlines also flies the Davao- Singapore as well as the Singapore-Davao airways five times a week (except Tuesdays and Fridays).

Davao Traveler Tip #1: There are hotel shuttle services waiting in the airport ready to take you to your hotel of choice once you arrive. Ask the airport staff and they’ll gladly lead the way for you. Also, check out our Davao Hotels section for more information on Davao City accommodations.

2. Festivalandia

Like every region in the Philippines, Davao City is home to wonderful festivities. Not to mention the many festivals celebrated by communities all over the city, DC is known for two nationally acclaimed festivals – the Araw ng Dabaw Festival, and the Kadayawan sa Dabaw Festival.

The Araw ng Dabaw Festival is celebrated every 16th of March. This city-wide festivity is highlighted by a number of events including parades around the city streets by bands, dancers, and socio-civic institutions. However, this event’s spotlight would probably fall brightest on the Mutya ng Dabaw. The Mutya ng Dabaw showcases the beauty and intelligence of a true blue Dabawenya. This is one of the most anticipated event (if not the most anticipated) every Araw ng Dabaw.

During the second week of August, Davao City gears up for the country famous Kadayawan festival. What used to be a thanksgiving ritual for fertility among the citizens of Davao has now become a national attraction, and is slowly becoming a world class sensation by gaining endless plaudits from the traveling population.

Apart from the famous street dances and parades, as well as the Hiyas ng Kadayawan (another famous beauty pageant), the Kadayawan also highlights the indigenous tribes who serve as the foundation of what is now a modern metropolis. That is why the Kadayawan has this rustic feel to it. Witnessing it would mean witnessing the beautiful beginnings of Davao through the show of customs and traditions.

Davao Traveler Tip #2: These festivals include a week long stretch of various side events. So come in to town about a week before the day of the culminating event. Also, during these fests, touring packages are at their best while their prices are at a discounted rate.

3. The Booming Flower

As much as the land is fertile and provides us with abundant harvest all year round, DC has also established itself as one of the cities for the future. With BPO (Business Process Outsourcing) and ITes (Information Technology Enabled Services) companies sprouting at a near frenzied rate in the area, the local economy is steadily experiencing booms (sonic-booms, to be exact). Sooner or later, everybody would want to jump in and ride Davao’s bandwagon to success.

With projects showing up as time goes on, it won’t be long until this city will become a go-to-destination when it comes to high tech business. So if you’re looking for a place to invest at the same time enjoy, don’t ever hesitate – visit Davao soon!

Davao Traveler says: Davao City is not only a growing field of science and technology, it also is a consistent player in the global import-export arena.

4. Dial 9-1-1

We love cities that offer us a sense of safety and security really well. That one factor sets Davao City as one of the best among the rest.

The city offers a centralized system of paramedical, fire, police, and other auxiliary services that can be contacted by dialing three numbers (I don’t need to say that it’s 911, do I?). With high-tech equipment such as the ECAD (Emergency Computer Aided Dispatch), highly efficient and professional staff, and state-of-the-art tools for the trade (i.e. ambulances and fire trucks), you never have to worry about getting help in case of emergencies.

Davao Traveler says of 911 : Unlike other cities in the world with the 9-1-1 system, availing the Davao version actually doesn’t cost a thing.

5. House Rules

Like every home away from home, there are some things you might want to get adjusted to once you step foot on Davao soil. For instance, DC strictly follows an Anti-Smoking ordinance. When in the city, smoking is illegal in public transportation, enclosed establishments and public places. However, establishments offer a designated smoking area if you need to smoke.

During big celebrations, including the New Year’s Eve, DC citizens follow a strict code known as the Fire-Cracker Ban. This code prohibits the manufacture, sale, distribution, sale and use of pyrotechnic devices as well as other similar devices and explosives. Don’t fret though. The celebrations are never dull even without explosions all around. After all, this ordinance was made for everyone’s benefit. And while the locals deemed it a little bit “uncomfortable” during the early years of the code, everybody now understands what good it has done to everyone’s welfare.

But house rules aren’t all about creating a limitation – they’re about the welfare of the general populace as well. And so Davao, being one of the most livable cities in Asia, has a number of codes that provide the city’s general populace the needed protection. Humanitarian codes such as the Children’s Welfare Code and the Women’s Code, and business related ones such as the Investment Incentives Code make the area a favorable environment for interaction.

For more information, visit Davao City’s official website at www.davaocity.gov.ph.

That’s it for now as another Davao feature comes to a close. We hope this one serves as a good guide for all you would-be Davao Travelers out there. Be sure to tune in regularly for the latest buzz around the hive.

Stay fresh everyone!

The Damosa Gateway : A Davao Business Travel Must-See Destination

June 19, 2009 by Davao Traveler Admin

Today’s edition of our Davao traveler tour brings us northbound, to a favorite hangout for people staying in the Bajada area and beyond. We’re talking of none other than The Damosa Gateway. Let’s check out what this area has to offer in terms of both business and pleasure; perhaps a combination of ample food tripping and some business matters should convince you that there may be such thing as another place like home. Why so? Because we’re taking you somewhere that has everything you will ever need, and more than you’ll ever want! So, shall we begin?

The Gateway to Davao Travel

I remember this place being dusty and lifeless about a decade ago; save for a few small shops in the area, there was really nothing to care about. However, with passing time came consequential success, and for this Damosa Land owned estate, there was no way but up. It was a prime lot about to reach it prime; and that it was just a matter of time before it lives up to the hype. Now, this buzzing hotspot caters to business, nightlife, food, booze, and a lot of things that should make Davao proud, and every traveler happy!

Aptly named The Gateway, this booming domain can be found on the side of the Pan-Philippine highway, while flanking the ever alive Mamay Road on both sides. This position does not only give the place some much needed human influx, it also serves as an “oasis” to travelers. After all, this gateway is more or less, just a ten-minute ride away from the airport. The moment you land on Davao soil, you don’t have to go far to enjoy your stay right away!

Business By Day

The special thing about this area is its versatility. Whether you’ve been in Davao for days already and you’re looking for a place that offers essential services in the Lanang and Bajada areas, or you just landed and you need to do some quick transactions straight from the airport, you can be sure that this place means business.

To start with, the area has a number of banks, a travel agency, a barbershop, a massage and beauty salon, a spa, and a dental clinic. The Market Basket is also settled in the area, an establishment which houses dining and shopping boutiques. While in here, you’ll never run out of essential basic supplies as this place has a grocery too. That’s one good reason that makes this place a convenient hang-out. And then there’s even more!

You can also find the Damosa IT Park in this area. The IT Park was developed by Damosa Land to house big IT companies (think: Call Centers) going about its business here in Davao. This doesn’t only make the gateway known throughout the nation; it also is making waves in the global field of Information Technology and Business Process Outsourcing in particular!

We Love The Japs

For our Japanese and Filipino-Japanese travelers who are looking to stay in the city for a relatively long time, this place has a grocery shop made exactly for you. Visit the Fuji Mart Japanese Grocery for your authentic Japanese shopping experience. Not only that, they also have two Japanese aided schools in the area that can provide your (or your children’s) educational needs the Philippine Nikkei Jin Kai International School and the Mindanao Kokusai Daigaku.

Accommodation

Also, if you just arrived in Davao City and you’re looking for a good place to stay, you might want to check the Microtel Inns and Suites out. Conveniently found only minutes away from the Davao Airport, this hotel is also in the vicinity. That means you don’t have to go far from the airport to find whatever it is you’re looking for once you stay in this hotel.

Fun, Fun, Fun at Night

The Damosa Gateway offers a fun-filled night as much as it offers serious business during the day. With the oozing population preferring to stay in the area to spend the night away, the gateway never runs out of life round the clock. May it be booze, deli, or coffee, people just can’t resist visiting this place.

The Flavors of the East

For some Oriental taste, you might want to visit Taj Minar Bar and Restaurant. They offer Indian cuisine at its best. This place also caters to vegetarians via their vegetarian meals. All the dishes they offer come with authentic Indian spices that make the food even tastier.

How about Japanese food? Tsuru and Tadakuma are two Japanese Restaurants in the area. With two Jap restaurants offering a large menu in the area, what type of food could we probably miss out? Even the ambience in these two diners makes you feel you’re in Japan while you’re in Davao!

And then there’s the Hanoi Vietnamese Restaurant. This one’s my personal favorite. With dishes like Fried Spring Rolls, Cha Noung (pork barbeque, lettuce, rice noodles and basil wrapped in rice paper), and the scrumptious Butter and Garlic Crabs (this one is a must try!), you’ll surely have a happy stomach the moment you step out of the restaurant to continue your Davao travel.

How about some Fillipino dishes? Visit Dencio’s Kamayan for the beautiful food this beautiful country has to offer. For some Chinese food, Dimsum Diner offers fresh and hot Chinese delicacies round the clock.

The Wild Wild West — Flavors from the Other Side of the World

If you’re craving for Mediterranean food, Ristorante Spirale won’t disappoint. Food in this restaurant is, as they say in Italy, Delizioso! How Italian? Carbonara Spaghetti, Spaghetti with Meatballs, and pizza; all prepared the Italian way. How delicious? Food is “must try”, and this place is a “must visit”. All because saying they’re all delicious is understatement!

For booze and deli, go to La Taverna and Hola Espana. After you get some good Spanish meal including the likes of Gambas and Paella, there’s nothing better than a mug full of ice cold beer. They also offer the rustic Spanish ambience inside, while outside, they’ll lure you by playing some smooth Latino music.

Pizza anyone? The Damosa Gateway is home to the Yellow Cab Pizza Co. and Giacominos. The former is very well known for their hefty, American style pizza. The latter thrives in preparing pizza the Italian style. They also serve something other than pizza. You can order things like chicken fillet, chili wings, barbeque ribs, and carbonara spaghetti.

Burger lovers will have an easy time finding their favorite in the area. Space Burger offers grilled burger patties and a lot of yummy stuff in between. Or if you’re always on the go, McDonald’s is open 24/7. That place doesn’t need a lot of introduction, right? Ronald McDonald is just everywhere every time, just like the traveler in you!

You might also want to check that place that looks like your typical cowboy cavern named the Avenue S Bar and Grill. While the look of this place looks comfortable old-school, the ice cold beer should be just as good as it always is! For chicken lovers, there’s the Q Resto. This resto is famously known for their eat-all-you-can greaseless chicken meal which you can get at only PhP 95 PHP. Now I’m hungry. 😉

Coffee Love

Because a day without coffee is never a day; only a fleeting moment.

Whether it’s in Coffee Dream or in Caffe Firenzo, complete your night with a cup of warm or cold coffee. Or perhaps, some chilled blends? As long as it’s coffee in a good coffee shop, you’ll never find it dead boring. Top your coffee with some pastry or sandwich, and you’re all done – the day will surely be complete. Though I haven’t been to Coffee Dream, I’ve spent some time in Firenzo. Apart from the Wi-Fi connection, the place offers a relaxing and cozy ambience. I’d give big ten stars to rate whoever did the interior design of this place. He or she just did us a lot of favor by providing us comfort that goes with the coffee. All in all, the whole experience is truly remarkable!

So there you have it, the Damosa Gateway scouted and reviewed for your convenience. All that’s left is for you to actually visit the place and experience the fun for yourself. Just be sure to tune back in for some specific visits to the shops in the area. Aside from that, we’ll continue to give you every Davao destination that suits your interest. I hope to see you around town one of these days. Have a good week everyone and bon voyage!
